Rosemary Basson, MD, FRCP, is Head of Sexual Medicine at the University of British Columbia, Canada. She has always been intrigued by the complexities of women's sexual motivation and sexual desire. Her research team recently disconfirmed any differences in androgen activity between women with and without hypoactive sexual desire disorder, using mass spectroscopy assays of testosterone and metabolites. Instead, they found altered stress hormones in the clinical women, which are currently under further investigation. Dr. Basson's other main interests are the sexual pain of provoked vestibulodynia and men and women's sexual dysfunctions in the context of chronic disease. Dr. Basson's research is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
